Why I started Mother Approves

There is one main reason I started MotherApproves.net and that reason is right here. I’m the proud father of a four week old little girl and I couldn’t be happier. She’s been an amazing blessing to my life and a joy to have around.

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous about the parenting thing, nervous about holding a fragile baby in my arms, and knowing what to do with her when she cried. What I found out just hours after she entered the world, is that there is a lot that just comes naturally. When I was sitting there face to face with my own child I had confidence that I would do the right thing, and I’d seek out answers if I didn’t know what to do. The seeking out answers part is what gave me the idea of Mother Approves.

I like to be informed, sometimes with useful information, sometimes with useless information. One site I found both informative and entertaining for tech related news was Digg, but I realized it was mostly entertainment. I loved that it was user driven, relying on the thoughts, wisdom and opinions of a mass of people to decide what was important and newsworthy. What I needed was that same sort of advice and discernment for my parenting. Enter: Mother Approves.

The idea behind Mother Approves is simple. A user-driven community of parents sharing & approving stories and advice that are useful to the parenting community. Here are just a few examples of it’s uses:

  • I want to know of the best website for buying cloth diapers. I search Mother Approves and check out the sites with the most Approvals.
  • I read a great blog post about ways to entertain your bored 2 year old, I submit it to Mother Approves for others to read.
  • An obscure study comes out about the dangers of a certain food item. The Story is submitted and approved and hundreds of parents read it and are informed about something that otherwise might have gone unnoticed.
  • You come across a hilarious video about parenting on YouTube. You submit it for others to enjoy.
  • Post your own blog posts, promote your new baby business, share important news related to parenting, the possibilities are endless!

As you can see, I’m pretty excited about the potential Mother Approves has for becoming a central resource for you, me and other parents to work together to create a community that uses are collected wisdom to share the best in parenting with one another.

Are you catching the vision?

Congratulations. I LOVE the idea of a DIGG site for parenting stuff! I really hope this takes off… I’ll be checking back.

    A couple suggestions:
    - have this post linked on your “About” page.
    - Have a page of “Get involved” or “Submit your site” or something like that right up front. And tell us what to do! What do we do to submit stuff? What buttons are we looking for to get “digged”? Because the more of us put those buttons on our posts, and link here, the more awareness this site will get, right?

    Good luck!
    Cathy
